This description refers to a specialized milling jar designed for one primary purpose: the grinding of alumina (aluminum oxide, Al₂O₃) itself, with minimal contamination. This is a classic case where the grinding jar must be made of the same, or a harder, material than the sample being processed.
1. "For Alumina" – The Critical Application
This is the most important part of the phrase. It specifies the jar's intended use: milling alumina powders. The reason for this specificity is fundamental to materials science:
Contamination Control: When you are processing a high-purity material like alumina for advanced ceramics, the introduction of any foreign element (like iron from a steel jar or silica from an agate jar) can severely degrade the final product's properties (e.g., electrical insulation, thermal stability, mechanical strength).
The Solution: Matched Material Grinding: By using a jar and grinding balls also made of alumina (corundum), you ensure that any minute wear debris that enters your sample is chemically identical to the sample itself. This prevents cross-contamination and preserves the intrinsic purity of the alumina powder.
2. "Wear-Resistant Corundum" – The Material of Choice
Corundum: This is the mineralogical name for crystalline aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃). It is one of the hardest known materials, ranking 9 on the Mohs scale.
Wear-Resistant: This property is a direct result of the corundum structure. The jar is sintered at high temperatures to form a dense, polycrystalline ceramic body with extreme hardness. This ensures the jar itself has a very long lifespan when grinding its own kind of material, as it is highly resistant to abrasion.
3. "Vertical" – The Operational Orientation
As previously discussed, this indicates the jar is designed for use in mills where the jar is mounted upright on a rotating plate, such as in a planetary ball mill. The geometry and structural integrity are optimized for the high centrifugal forces and complex motion patterns in this configuration.
4. "Ball Milling Jar" – The Function
This is the general term for the container that holds the sample and the grinding media (balls) in a ball mill.
